Intelligence vs Commonsense

Updated: Oct 26, 2020

The instance what we are going to read about is common among community or individuals who have been born and brought up in a middle class family. Coming from a middle class background my process of gaining knowledge started with the regular schooling as any other kid would do. Being a banker my dad had a transferable job. His job demanded shifting of our family to different places for every three years. Assuming schools with good pass percentage will make a person intelligent, my dad always tried to get an admission in a school which had a good pass percentage. In the current scenario ‘SUCCESS’ is measured in terms of the marks/grades they score. We are busy participating in the rat race and come out of school without even knowing what INTELLIGENCE is?

Do you have a question or many questions recurring in your mind? How do you try to find an answer for the question which is haunting you continuously?

Entering into my Under Graduate course my perception towards INTELLIGENCE started changing. I started realizing Intelligence is not something which is hardwired into our head. During the tenure of my course the so called ‘knowledge’ which I gained through my exams and books helped me a little. Whereas travelling from one place to another due to the nature of my father’s job, meeting new people from urban to rural areas, studying in different schools, memories I made with my neighbors helped me to differentiate between learning and experiential learning. The experiences and memories I gathered helped me in Architectural education since it deals with designing of spaces for various categories of people.

Be Simple, Be conscious, Be logical

Another interesting observation with regard to common sense is simple solutions for bigger problems. Great and striking solutions have always been a resultant of COMMON SENSE at par with intelligence. Our grandparents have a more viable solution for a problem when we struggle to solve it with the help of technology and theoretical knowledge gained through our systematic education. Great entrepreneurs have created their business kingdom with simple ideas which are down to earth solutions for complicated problems.

Education and organized learning undoubtedly intensifies individual’s knowledge and strengthen them to believe in themselves. Common-sense gives us an awareness which acts as a third eye, to perceive things clearly which is not persuaded…….

Balance between Knowledge and Experience

“The ability to observe without evaluating is the highest form of intelligence”- Jiddu Krishnamurthy

I strongly believe Intelligence and common sense together makes a person genius and at times both are no different, they are one and the same. Keeping this as the primary Goal I always motivate and encourage my students to learn in their own way keeping COMMON SENSE as their primary tool of observation.
